An evening of durational sonic performances featuring live works by:

Jaguar Mary X, Kite aka Suzanne Kite, Aine Nakamura, Craig Chin, Al Margolis and WINCY (aka Winslow and Nancy Kim)

On Saturday, April 15th, 5-7pm, Glasshouse in New Paltz will host ‘Echo', dedicated to sonic performances, which explore themes of memory through reverberation, repetition or reflection in performance. Each of the performances will be presented simultaneously, immersed in the domestic scapes of our premises. 

This durational performance evening will be opening our 16th season, titled: ‘Present Continuous’. A cross-generational trans cultural attempt to discuss aspects of longevity and survival of a performance practice. A meditation on what it looks like to carry the weight of immaterial, taking on changing forms and methodologies of connecting past and future through space, as a collective learning of artistic unknowing.

Artist Bios:

Kite aka Suzanne Kite is an Oglála Lakȟóta performance artist, visual artist, and composer raised in Southern California, with a BFA from CalArts in music composition, an MFA from Bard College’s Milton Avery Graduate School, and a PhD from Concordia University. Kite’s scholarship and practice investigate contemporary Lakota ontologies through research-creation, computational media, and performance. Kite has also published in books, journals and magazines, including in The Journal of Design and Science (MIT Press), with the award winning article, “Making Kin with Machines,” co-authored with Jason Lewis, Noelani Arista, and Archer Pechawis. Kite was a 2019 Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholar. Kite is currently a 2022-2023 Creative Time Open Call artist for the Black and Indigenous Dreaming Workshops with Alisha B. Wormsley, a Research Assistant for the Initiative for Indigenous Futures, and Artist in Residence and Visiting Scholar at Bard College.  Artist website: www.kitekitekitekite.com/

Jaguar Mary X is a glossolalia vocalist, ritual performance artist and mover, making work informed by queer and black feminist discourse, afro-futurisms, plant sentience and shamanism. Jaguar Mary X attended the Whitney Independent Studies Program in 1995 and completed MFA degrees at California Institute for the Arts (Film/Video, 2009) and at Pratt Institute (Performance and Performance Studies, 2019) in Brooklyn. In 1989 they co-founded the historic Clit Club with Julie Tolentino. They identify as non-binary, agender. Originally from Washington, DC, they are currently in residence at the Art Life Institute founded by Linda Montano in Kingston, New York. They are the creator of the yearly, Queerteenth Performance Art Festival in Kingston. In 2022 they received the honor of City of Kingston’s Distinguished Artist Award for 2022-24. Jaguar Mary X is on Radio Kingston twice a week as the voice and creator of Midday and Midnight Medicine Journey, a program that centers ancestral appreciation and international music by BIPOC experimental, electronic and ambient producers.  Artist website: www.jaguarmary.com

Aine E. Nakamura is a singer, performer and composer. She creates her idiosyncratic transborder art of voice and body. Her recent solo performances include a Winning Work for Site-Specific Performance at the Venice Biennale at its 50th International Theatre Festival in 2022, and her performance project at Berliner Festspiele's 2022 Theatertreffen in Berlin, Germany. She has presented her one-woman exhibition at The Gallatin Galleries NY (2021), her mixed art and music performances and compositions at Berlin University of the Arts (2023), The LAB in SF (2022), HfM Hanns Eisler Berlin (2022), Errant Sound (2022), A Concert of Electronic Music in honor of Mario Davidovsky (2019), Dias de Música Electroacústica (2019), New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival performed with cellist Madeleine Shapiro (2018), October New Music Festival in Finland performed with MikroEnsemblen (2018), and Abrons Arts Center with the International Contemporary Ensemble (2019). Her other appearances include The Two directed by Dmitry Krymov (New York Theater Workshop 2019), and OPERA Ensemble at Watermill Center (2021). Nakamura is an Awardee of the Fulbright Fellowship (Berlin, Germany 2021-2022), The Leo Bronstein Homage Award, and The Honorable Mention Award for the 2020 Pauline Oliveros New Genre Prize. ERRANT SPACE is a project of composer/recordist Craig Chin, it specializes in durational performances that explore the effect of sound on time and space. Performances are site-specific, spontaneous compositions influenced by both the physical characteristics of the space they are performed in and the occupants of that space. Craig has also produced the monthly Errant Space Podcast for over seven years, which often features experimental and electronic musicians. Additionally, Craig has curated several music series, including a monthly electronic and experimental night and the Space Out, Outside series. He also has a weekly radio show, The Space Program, on Vassar College’s Station WVKR. Website: http://www.errant.space/

Al Margolis is a composer/performer, improvisor, and painter. Since 1984, often under his project name If, Bwana, he has worked in the field of non-commercial, non-popular music and sound, making music that has swung between fairly spontaneous studio constructions and more process-oriented composition. Margolis continues to collaborate live with video artist Katherine Liberovskaya and performs as an electronic/acoustic duo with Tom Law (Duo Denum). Other projects include Elka Bong (a duo with Walter Wright), a duo with electronic musician Max Hamel, and various ad hoc groupings with guitarist Lucas Brode. He also ran his cassette label Sound of Pig Music (1984-1989) and was co-founder (with David Prescott and Gen Ken Montgomery) of the experimental music label Pogus Productions, which he continues to run.

WINCY is Winslow and Nancy Kim, local Greene County artists and collaborators.
Winslow is a musician, radio host, and geographer. He captures and manipulates sounds under the name pleurodesis. He also curates and hosts the Upon the Cypress Bough radio show for WGXC/Wave Farm. https://soundcloud.com/pleurodesis

Nancy Kim is an artist whose interdisciplinary work navigates across sculpture, sound, design, and architecture. Their projects consider both time and “waste” as physical materials that transmute into portals to ancestral knowledge and histories untold. Their sonic moniker Nyhne, explores feedback, drone, found sounds, ritual, and spoken word to form textural landscapes for catharsis. They have shown work at the Reykjavik Art Museum (Iceland); A Guide to the Field (Mountaindale, NY); Arario Gallery (New York, NY), Van Alen Institute (New York, NY), and MIT Keller Gallery (Cambridge, MA). They hold degrees from Parsons School of Design (BFA) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.Arch) and are currently based in Athens, NY. www.nancy-kim.com
